How do you find a niche that is not so obvious? In the past, I have talked about how to find a niche to make money online. One of the technique I have mentioned in that post is to use a keyword research tool like Google AdWords Keyword tool.
After reading a blog post about a list of 190 keyword suggestions, I decided to do some experiment to find out if one could use keywords from the list to discover not so obvious niches.
It is a list of 190 keyword suggestions that you can use to start your keyword research to find a niche. It is not a list of obvious niches like skiing, stock market, health, insurance, credit cards, etc. It is also not a list of micro-niches like weight loss, acne, balding, vitamins, low carb diets, etc.
The list has 190 niche finding keywords like where can, how to, improve etc. If you are thinking about a broad niche and you want to explore it further to discover micro niches, the list is helpful. For example, using the keyword how to from the list, I found a niche – protein diet – using the key phrase how to diet in Google AdWords Keyword tool.
I also spent some time to find out if it was possible to discover a niche using only the suggested keywords from the list. I picked the word TOP from the list and entered in the Goolge Adwords Keyword tool. Most of the searches were about top songs and music which were obvious niches. I wanted to find a niche that was difficult to come up by brain storming only.
I did not give up. I went to SEO Book keyword Suggestion, another free keyword research tool. The most searched phrase, according to the tool, was top holiday gifts. Umm. I wanted to narrow the niche further. I took the phrase holiday gifts and and used it in Google Adwords Keyword tool. Eureka! As I browsed the list, I found a high volume search phrase - gift baskets.
Here is a niche that I did not think about when I started the experiment.
Finding not so obvious niches takes time and you should be ready to invest a couple of hours every week if you are serious about it. The list of 190 keyword suggestions is another tool that you can use in your niche finding mission. Once you find a niche, don’t forget to participate in a forum related to the niche.
