If you’re running a website for a while, you must have received numerous unsolicited emails that promise you page one ranking of your site in search engines. Ignore those emails. Genuine search engine optimization firms don’t send unsolicited emails and they cannot promise anything.  They can help you find if anything is wrong with your site in terms of SEO (search engine optimization) and suggest how to improve it.

But, the good news is that you can do your own SEO using my easy SEO plan. You don’t need the help of search engine optimization firms, specially when you are starting your online business and money is tight.

Moreover, it is mandatory that you implement some of the SEO  techniques I have discussed here if you want to improve your site’s ranking in the search engine result page. The easy way to implement SEO is to use the WordPress blogging platform to develop your site. You can not only use WordPress for blogging, you can also use it to develop a full fledged site with all the bells and whistles.

Blogging is the easiest path when you are learning how to build a website. If you have a hosting account with HostGator, even the cheapest $10 unlimited domain hosting plan, you can set up WordPress in 30 minutes and ready for your first blog post. Here is a YouTube video on how to setup WordPress at HostGator.

How to Install WordPress in HostGator

Once you setup WordPress, you will install a few plug-ins to improve your visitors’ experience and make your site more search engine friendly. One such plug-in is All In One SEO. This plug-in will automate lots of SEO for your blog posts. It will install meta keywords and other stuff that are essentials for search engine optimization.

I could not find a video that shows how to install it in the newer version of WordPress. The newer version of WordPress has changed their admin user interface. But the basic idea of plug-in installation is the same in the newer version as it was in the older version. Here is an YouTube video that tells you how to install All In One SEO plugin in WordPress (using the older interface)

There are 10 areas to search engine optimization without spending lots of time and they are

  1. Get a domain name that has primary keyword the describes your site.
  2. Use 3 to five long tail (more than 2 words) keywords for your home page title.
  3. For each post, select a long tail (more than 2 words) keyword that is the focus of the post.
  4. Write an attention grabbing title using the keyword for your post. Most WordPress themes use H2 tag for the post title. Though H1 tag is better, but it is fine as long as you put the keyword in the post title.
  5. Use tags (same as keywords) in your meta keywords and description. Meta description is less important. Many search engines are now looking for an About page in your website and using excerpts from that page to describe your site. My suggestion is to have an About page and use a keyword rich first paragraph to describe your website. By default, your WordPress SEO plug-in will take an excerpt from your post and use it in your meta description.
  6. Use the selected keyword in the first paragraph of your post and make it bold.
  7. Sparingly use subtle variations of your primary keyword for the post in the post and emphasize them using italics.
  8. Use the keyword in the Alt attribute of images you post.
  9. Use keywords to name your image files, instead of using file1, file2, etc.
  10. Link to other pages (or blog posts) in your web site using the keyword as an anchor text.

Now you know that it is not a rocket sicent to implement easy SEO without using search engine optimization firms. You can do it yourself.
