As I mentioned in my last post, even if you are using a free web host, you must have your own domain name. So, how do you find an available domain? While lots of one and two words good domains are already taken, you should still be able to find a keyword-rich domain in your niche.

Once you decide on a niche you will be working on, use the Google AdWords Keyword Tool to collect a few keywords in your niche. These are the keywords you should focus on writing contents for your niche. For example, if you want to write and promote hiking related stuff, some of the suggested key words are: hiking shoes, hiking boots, hiking clothes, hiking backpacks, etc.

If want to go into a micro-niche, e.g. hiking boot, you should look for an available domain related to hiking boot, hiking shoes, etc. However, if you want to keep the niche broad, hiking should be your keyword.

I use DomainsBot.com to find an available domain. When I enter the word hiking in the search box of DomainsBot and click on the search button, I see a list of domains with hiking as one of the word in the domain name. You should preferably look for a .com domain.

But, you will find that most of the listed domains are either Registered (i.e., unavailable) or For Sale (i.e., somebody has already registered the domain and wants to sell it to you at a premium price that can run into thousands). Ignore all those Registered and For Sale domains and keep looking for a domain that has its status as Available. Lucky me, I see a good domain PopularHiking.com still available for purchase. It may be gone by the time you read this post).

You can filter out all Registered and For Sale domains by unchecking the check box on the right hand side of the DomainBot result page. Using the same technique, you can view only the .com domains. Find a .com domain because a .com domain has more business value than any other domain extension.

At DomainsBot, you will see domains related to your searched keywords listed in multiple pages. If you cannot find a good domain in the first page, keep looking for an available domain in pages 2, 3, and so on.

Now let me check what I find when I enter the key phrase hiking boot. Well, I see a lot more available domains, and some good ones are HikingFootware, HikingKick, MileHikingBoot, etc.

Once you find a good available domain, click on the Buy Now button, it will show you a list of domain registrars where you can register the available domain. You can also read reviews of each registrar by clicking the Read reviews link next to the vendors logo. I use 1&1.com and GoDaddy.com for all my domain registration.Keep in my mind not to pay more than $10 for a domain registration.
