Are you using press releases to get back links to your web site? If not, you need to submit a press release whenever there are major improvements to your website. You must submit a press release at the launch of your new site. Regularly submitting press releases a few time a year will help you get some backlinks from high quality sites. However, you should only submit press releases if you have some newsworthy thing to say about your site.

What is a press release? A press release is a news related article about your site. It is not a promotional piece. It is used to announce time sensitive information. For example, when you launch a site, you want to announce it to the world. Or, when you added a new feature that benefits users greatly, you would like everybody know about it.
On the web, you need to think about the links that you would like to get from other websites when you do a press release submission. You need to use proper anchor texts in those links also. You need to use keywords related to your niche in the anchor texts.
So, your goal for press release submission is two fold – to acquire back links from trust worthy sites and keyword rich anchor texts pointing to your site back.
You can use free press release submission sites to submit your press releases but most of them do not allow links in your press release submissions. You can put the URL of your site but those URLs will not be clickable.
Some free press release sites do allow clickable links of your site’s URL but you cannot use anchor texts for those links.
You can use your choice of anchor texts if you are using a paid press release submission sites. They range from $50-$500 depending on various options you select for your submissions. The fee-based submission sites will send your release to many highly trusted sites like Google and Yahoo! news, CNET, EIN news, InboxRobot, American Chronicles, etc. A few links from these sites is worth the money if you can afford it.
Even if you cannot afford to spend any money, you should at least submit a press release when you launch your sitem preferebly using a service that allows you a clickable link to your site.
If you are using press release submission to promote your site, share it with others in the comments. I will discuss about some of the free and fee-based services in a future post.
